Ship of the Fens

The city of Ely, Cambridgeshire, and the surrounding fenlands and East Anglia
Another place well worth a visit if you’re in Cornwall is Roche Rock, near Roche. Pronounced Roach, it comes from the Norman-French word for rock, effectively calling it ‘Rock Rock’. It’s also near the Eden Project and Bodmin, which makes it perfect for a day-trip in the area!
Partly carved out of, and partly created of the surrounding rock, Roche Rock is thought to have been either a hermitage and/or occupied by a leper. It also features in the story of Tristan and Isolde in the King Arthur legends. Tristan was King Mark’s nephew who accidentally shared a love potion with King Mark’s intended queen Isolde, resulting in Tristan and Isolde falling hopelessly in love. Thereafter, their lives involved in a series of furtive trysts, while they sought to escape the traps laid for them by the suspicious Mark.
Roche Rock is one of a number of sites around Cornwall that are linked with the lovers. The real tragedy, though, is that Roche Rock is not treated as a major tourist attraction.
